Your Nervous System on Float: Parasympathetic Activation Explained

September came and went in a flurry of school schedules, shifting routines, and full calendars. But even amidst the busy-ness, many of you found your way into the float tank and the difference showed.

As for me? I hit a wall. After a unique networking retreat event later in the month, I came home completely fried. As an introverted ADHD’r, I pushed past my social threshold even though I prepped beforehand. That night, I sat alone in a dark room, tuned into some bilateral beats, and zoned out with Tetris on a Game Boy to reset my brain. It helped a lot.. but the next day, I still felt it: a mental drag that wouldn’t lift.

Thankfully, I had a float scheduled. I popped on our waterproof headphones, selected a binaural track, and gave myself 90 minutes of nothing. Just weightlessness and slow, 4 second box breathing. And that was the real reset. I didn’t feel the lingering tension after that float. I felt calm. Focused. Grounded.

So what actually happened in that tank?

It’s all about the parasympathetic nervous system, the branch of your autonomic nervous system responsible for rest, digestion, and recovery. It’s the opposite of your fight or flight mode. When you float, you reduce sensory input. No gravity, no screens, no notifications. This tells your body it’s safe to shift gears. Your heart rate slows. Cortisol levels drop. Digestion improves. Breathing deepens. And your brain gets a chance to truly rest.

Many people describe their first float as “the most relaxed I’ve felt in years” and that’s not just a vibe. It’s a real physiological shift. Over time, regular floating can help your body practice this state more often, even outside the tank.
