"If floating were a pill, everyone would take it."

SCIENCE!
Here at the big white newsletter desk, we’re always looking for hard research that supports our guests’ excellent in-tank experiences. So…we are thrilled to announce that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) just dropped a major study examining the benefits of floating!
According to the NIH: “Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy via floatation (i.e., floatation-REST) is a behavioral intervention designed to systematically attenuate exteroceptive sensory input to the nervous system.”
Uhm…ha ha ha, OK…. I think we know what floating is, even without all the big words. This study of floating, the first funded by NIH, focused on safety. They found that floating has NO serious adverse effects—and many positive effects—for people with conditions ranging from clinical anxiety and depression to PTSD.
By comparison, consider how safety has become a major concern around medications for depression and anxiety. Many antidepressant medications like SSRIs contain suicide warnings and anti-anxiety medications using benzodiazepines have addiction warnings. Serious adverse events can also occur with psychedelics: an FDA advisory committee recently rejected MDMA for the treatment of PTSD. Indeed, even non-chemical behavioral interventions such as psychotherapy come with safety issues.
