      <image:title>Stasis Float Center Blog - Stasis October Float Notes - “Waiting to Exhale.” (Learning to Breathe)</image:title>
      <image:caption>Start slow, start small, and work your way up. Perhaps set a timer for one minute and increase the time as you get used to breathwork. Deep breathing comes from your diaphragm; your shoulders and upper chest should move very little. Place a hand on your belly and practice pushing it in and out as your abdomen fills and empties. Keep in mind, you can’t really “breathe wrong.” Anytime you pay attention to the breath you are engaging your parasympathetic (“relaxation”) system. You can’t mess that up! How? Get comfortable, sitting or lying flat. Rest your hands on your belly, just below the navel. As you inhale, let your belly soften and expand like a balloon. When you exhale, let your belly sink toward your spine. Next, place one hand on your ribs and the other on your belly. Breathe in slowly, let your belly soften, and feel your ribs expand. Finally, move the hand that was on your ribs to your upper chest, just below the collarbone. As you inhale, allow your belly to soften, your ribs to expand, and your upper chest to broaden. As you exhale, let everything go. When? Take three-to-five (more, if you feel it) of these deep breaths every morning before you get out of bed, again anytime during the day when you’ve noticed your breathing has become shallow and stressed, and again before you go to sleep at night. Do this daily and over the course of a couple weeks you’ve created a very simple, and incredibly beneficial habit… …or check out one of our Friday Breath sessions.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>How many times do we get into the tank and spend those first moments trying to calm the mind? “Shut up, Brain!” As we’ve noted in prior newsletters (if you missed it, it’s here: August Float Notes), a float tank is the perfect environment for inducing theta brainwave activity, similar to that twilight period between sleep and wakefulness. Because of this, we often leave the tank—having processed and integrated our thoughts and memories—with a profound sense of calmness. But there can be more to floating beyond the experience of this basic, transitory state. Floating provides an opportunity to actually meditate. As anyone who practices (or has tried to practice) meditation knows, effective meditation requires, well…practice! In the 1960s, research investigated the brainwave activity of monks, watching as they entered deeper meditative states and eventually reaching the theta stage. As the researchers tried to reproduce this in the lab, they quickly discovered that reaching this level of brainwave activity requires, in some cases, years of practice and discipline. However, some can reach the theta stage in a float tank after a few sessions (once the “novelty” of floating has worn off). The next section outlines three basic meditation techniques to try in the tank.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>‌By eliminating distractions, a float session can simplify and intensify the process of meditating. Here are three quick techniques to try. 1) Breath. You can help keep your mind from wandering by focusing your attention on your breath. Inhale deeply and hold for a few seconds. Count as you exhale, and at the end of the exhalation hold for a second before your next inhalation. Focus on the feeling of the breath entering and exiting the body. As thoughts arise, simply acknowledge them and let them pass. Pay attention to your wandering mind, then return your attention to your breath without judgement!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>We’ve all heard of the “vicious circle:” a small bad choice creates a bad situation, which puts us in the position to make more bad choices…and down we spiral. Each bad action reinforces the last bad action. But have you heard of the virtuous circle? It starts with one small, daily change. That change creates a positive result that over time leads to more positive change. Think of the parable of the grain of wheat and the chessboard. Start with a single grain, and double the amount for each square on the board: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, etc. The last square will contain 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 grains of wheat, or the amount of wheat produced worldwide over the course of 1,553 years. Reversing a vicious circle starts with a single grain of wheat. Positive actions reinforce positive changes, setting the stage for a virtuous circle!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>What are your current challenges? Health? Eating habits? Relationships? Work? What are your goals? Exercise? Meditation? Money management? Nutrition? Look friend, you didn’t get into the situation you’re in overnight. Rather, over the course of years, you became comfortable with each small move in a negative direction. A few bad decisions—repeated every year, every week, every day—have gradually made you more or less okay with the consequences of those decisions. Now the problem is a BIG HARD PROBLEM! Yowzah! A mountain! It’s easy to become discouraged when faced with a mountain! So, the motivation to make a change never comes. There’s never a right time. We never feel like doing the hard thing…. But here’s the twist: Action Creates Motivation. By doing the “hard thing”—making that one “small change”—our mind and body reward us immediately. We’ve accomplished something! We’re proud! We’re actually doing it! Humans thrive on reinforcement: salty snacks, alcohol, chocolate…even work! These things reward us, and we come back time and time again for those rewards. The reward inspires us to do that one hard thing over and over. And, like the grain of wheat, the smallest change compounded over time creates a big result. It’s a virtuous cycle! Here’s the formula: Do the small thing, even though you don’t feel like it + Repeat that daily = Hard change accomplished Today, use a tiny spark of energy to make one small change and let the virtuous cycle start working for you!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Whether we remember our dreams or not, we all dream. During a good night’s sleep we spend up to two hours dreaming over the course of four to six dream cycles. Research suggests that dreams may help with memory and emotions, or that dreams may just be the brain’s way of “tidying up” to prepare for the coming day. It often seems our dreams are nothing but a series of random images and stories. But, what if we could actively control what we dream? “Lucid dreaming” is when we are aware we are dreaming, but we remain asleep and in the dream state. Studies suggest that about half of us have had at least one lucid dream. In a lucid dream you know the events you’re witnessing aren’t real, but the dream feels like waking life, and you may even be able to participate in the dream and direct the action. Why have lucid dreams? Lucid dreaming may help you explore strategies to address interpersonal, competitive, or creative situations. It could also provide you with a sense of control that stays with you during your waking life. And, controlling the action in your dreams might help with nightmares. Finally, research has also found that it may be possible to improve simple motor skills while asleep. “Practicing” while dreaming appears to activate the same part of your brain as practicing while awake.       <image:caption>Lucid dreaming may provide a number of benefits…but how do we do it? I mean, I’m sleeping every night, and “nothing happens!” There are few techniques lucid dreamers use to create this state. First, throughout the day do “reality tests.” Try pushing your finger through your hand, or breathing through your mouth with your mouth closed. Testing during the day may allow you to test while dreaming, allowing you to recognize you’re in a dream. Second, create an intention before sleeping. Say: “Tonight I’ll remember I’m dreaming.” You could also set an alarm for about five hours into the night, awaken, and set that intention again for when you fall back asleep.       <image:caption>Unlike the five senses we use to process the outside world, “interoception” is how we process internal body messages. For example, interoception is how we “know” when we feel ill. Internal receptors tell the brain we are nauseated, feverish, or congested. Similarly, when we have good interoceptive awareness, we notice the effect external sensory messages have on our internal state. If I am having a difficult encounter with a person, my stress level increases. Interoception—my awareness of the “stress” feeling—signals my brain that I need to self-regulate to lower my arousal level. A recent podcast delved into the unconscious effect interoception has on our mental state: "Your brain, your spinal cord, your peripheral nervous system ... they're constantly monitoring what's happening inside the body. And at times, you become aware of it. But most of the time, you're not." We are overstimulated by external distractions—the low noise of the TV, “doom-surfing” the internet, emails and texts, social media—and fail to notice the fatigue, anxiety, and tension these distractions create. As you may have guessed by this point in a newsletter from a Float Center (LOL!), Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy (i.e. “floating”) is a wonderful antidote to external overstimulation. A float (or just 30 minutes in a quiet room away from our devices) removes the external stimulation, and allows our interoceptive receptors time to reset.       <image:caption>As people who float, we know the tremendous effect floating (“Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy”) has on the day of our float and, with practice, how that effect lingers in the days that follow. But has anyone taken a hard, scientific look at the effects of floating? If you’ve been following this newsletter then you’ve seen a study here or there showing effects like lowered cortisol levels, blood pressure, stress, etc. including studies by the National Institute of Health. For example, this piece of recent NIH research concludes: Stress, depression, anxiety, and worst pain were significantly decreased whereas optimism and sleep quality significantly increased for the flotation-REST group. No significant results for the control group were seen. There was also a significant correlation between mindfulness in daily life and degree of altered states of consciousness during the relaxation in the flotation tank. In contrast to floating, all prescription drugs come with some level of risk. Last year alone, almost 300 people died every day from an overdose, and the most commonly overdosed drugs are in the opioid or benzo families.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The artist and creative writer Hugh MacLeod has spent a great deal of time thinking and writing about creativity. In fact, he sees this approach to time as key to creativity. As MacLeod writes, creativity seldom happens in the orderly fashion of an assembly line. Creativity requires both concept and execution. The actual “product” of creativity—a well-formed sentence, a line of code, a brush stroke, a moving musical chord—might take little more than a few seconds to realize. But execution is the end of the creative process, not the creative process itself. Our best creative work comes from time spent in relatively “unproductive” time: time where we execute nothing; time to conceive of what we might create; time to play with our ideas. There is no apparent product…until there is. MacLeod proposes that we are most creative when we get a chance to think deeply about what we are creating, and then allow ourselves to consciously forget about it while our subconscious works it through. It takes work—practice, effort, and discipline—to execute our concepts effectively. But creativity also demands we take the time to conceive! “They're only crayons. You didn't fear them in Kindergarten, why fear them now?”</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Floating provides time in a distraction-free environment. This environment has a number of implications for creativity…. 1) As discussed in our August Float Notes, floatation tanks are an ideal setting for inducing a state of theta brainwave activity. During this twilight theta stage we often have unpredictable, vivid, dreamlike mental images. These may include memories, reveries, free associations, and insights or inspirations. 2) Tank time is an opportunity to better synchronize the right and left hemispheres of our brain. The left brain is more analytical, and is better at things like reading, writing, and computations. The right brain is more visual and intuitive and is the seat of imagination, intuition, visualization, and daydreaming. Although we use both halves of our brain all the time, in the absence of distractions, we are free to make associations, see patterns, and intuitively rearrange the details, logic, and words that are the focus of the left hemisphere. 3) Finally, as floating becomes part of your regular creative process, come to your float prepared with questions to answer and problems to solve. Tank time is the ideal time to consider big questions about composition, theme, color, and rhythm. Leave your critical voice outside the tank and trust the float experience will take you where you need to go.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Start slow, start small, and work your way up. Perhaps set a timer for one minute and increase the time as you get used to breath work. Deep breathing comes from your diaphragm; your shoulders and upper chest should move very little. Place a hand on your belly and practice pushing it in and out as your abdomen fills and empties. Keep in mind, you can’t really “breathe wrong.” Anytime you pay attention to the breath you are engaging your parasympathetic (“relaxation”) system. You can’t mess that up! How? Get comfortable, sitting or lying flat. Rest your hands on your belly, just below the navel. As you inhale, let your belly soften and expand like a balloon. When you exhale, let your belly sink toward your spine. Next, place one hand on your ribs and the other on your belly. Breathe in slowly, let your belly soften, and feel your ribs expand. Finally, move the hand that was on your ribs to your upper chest, just below the collarbone. As you inhale, allow your belly to soften, your ribs to expand, and upper chest to broaden. As you exhale, let everything go. When? Take three-to-five (more, if you feel it) of these deep breaths every morning before you get out of bed, again anytime during the day when you’ve noticed your breathing has become shallow and stressed, and again before you go to sleep at night. Do this daily and over the course of a couple weeks you’ve created a very simple, and incredibly beneficial habit… …or check out one of our Friday Breath sessions.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>How many times do we get into the tank, and spend those first moments trying to calm the mind? “Shut up, Brain!” As we’ve noted in prioe newsletters (if you missed it, it’s here: August Float Notes), a float tank is the perfect environment for inducing theta brainwave activity, similar to that twilight period between sleep and wakefulness. Because of this, we often leave the tank—having processed and integrated our thoughts and memories—with a profound sense of calmness. But there can be more to floating beyond the experience of this basic, transitory state. Floating provides an opportunity to actually meditate. As anyone who practices (or has tried to practice) meditation knows, effective meditation requires, well…practice! In the 1960s, research investigated the brainwave activity of monks, watching as they entered deeper meditative states and eventually reaching the theta stage. As the researchers tried to reproduce this in the lab, they quickly discovered that reaching this level of brainwave activity requires, in some cases, years of practice and discipline. However, some can reach the theta stage in a float tank after a few sessions (once the “novelty” of floating has worn off). The next section outlines three basic meditation techniques to try in the tank.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stasis Float Center Blog - Bodymind September Float Notes - “Shut up Brain!” In-Tank Meditation Techniques</image:title>
      <image:caption>‌By eliminating distractions, a float session can simplify and intensify the process of meditating. Here are three quick techniques to try. 1) Breath. You can help keep your mind from wandering by focusing your attention on your breath. Inhale deeply and hold for a few seconds. Count as you exhale, and at the end of the exhalation hold for a second before your next inhalation. Focus on the feeling of the breath entering and exiting the body. As thoughts arise, simply acknowledge them and let them pass. Pay attention to your wandering mind, then return your attention to your breath without judgement! 2) Body Awareness. You can promote relaxation by doing a “body scan.” Start by noticing your toes, then your feet, your ankles, shins, etc. As you come to each body part, reflect on any tension you might be holding there, and let it release. Move through your entire body, shoulders, limbs, neck, face (jaw! ears!) breathing through each segment and letting it release until you reach the crown of your head. 3) Visualization. You can use visualization during meditation to solve current creative problems or to imagine future goals. Once in the tank and settled, connect to the scenario you wish to explore and experiment with the possibilities that arise. Think, “I’m just going to practice this visualization, and see what happens.” With this approach, you need not struggle or become tense. Rather, make it your intention to explore these options. There is no end goal; there is no required result. Therefore, there is no way to “fail” at visualization!       <image:caption>What is our brain up to when we’re floating? Very small electrical-voltages flow across our brains constantly, and the rate of this flow determines our state of mental awareness. When we are most active, our brains are in gamma or beta states, with high-frequency electrical impulses. At the lowest frequency—the delta state—we are asleep! In his book, The Book of Floating, Michael Hutchinson explains some theories of tank-inspired brain activity. He focuses on the theta stage of brainwave activity. We all experience theta-wave activity twice a day as we move from wakefulness to sleep and vice-versa. During this twilight theta stage we often have unpredictable, vivid, dreamlike mental images. These may include memories, reveries, free associations, and insights or inspirations. But, we usually move through this stage quickly and either fall asleep or stretch and get out of bed. Experiments have shown that floatation tanks are an ideal setting for inducing this state of theta brainwave activity, while not actually falling asleep. The tank allows us to generate large amounts of theta, yet stay awake! So, we often leave the tank with a quiet body and tranquil emotions. Having processed and integrated our thoughts and memories in this twilight state, we may feel a profound sense of psychological well-being…. That is your brain on saltwater!       <image:caption>‌No joke. We’ve got some serious coffee fiends at the float center. While you’re floating, activity at the front desk often wanders into a conversation about beans, grinders, espresso machines, french presses, pour-overs and the like. Caffeine is among the most used drugs in the world. You yourself may use caffeine every day in your coffee, tea, chocolates, sodas, etc. But we know that, generally, caffeine and floating do not mix! Caffeine blocks the effects of the brain chemical that produces relaxation. For some people this will prevent them from experiencing the full benefits of their float. So…what to do? If you’re highly adapted to caffeine (and you know who you are) moderate intake with sufficient time prior to your session may give you your normal sense of relaxation. But, if you’re sensitive to caffeine, play it safe and skip it to increase your chances that your next float is your best!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>As we move into that brief Syracuse season of sunshine, our thoughts turn to outdoor activities. Those of us who sit behind the big desk at Bodymind have frequent conversations with cyclists, tri-athletes, and other endurance athletes. A float session can be an effective tool for both physical and psychological recovery following training, boosting athletic performance in a number of ways! Healing: When faced with injuries or general muscle fatigue, floating helps recovery. The high concentration of Epsom salt in a float tank helps the body more quickly recover, and floating weightlessly, takes pressure off joints, ligaments and tendons. Pain relief: Floating, according to many athletes and everyday floaters, gives an instant and immediate release from chronic pain and lingering injury. Better sleep: Floating improves the quality of sleep, a crucial factor in top performance. Stress relief: Although performing under pressure is a part of every competition, floating provides an escape and enhanced sense of relaxation. Increased focus: The meditative-like state floating induces can provide athletes a boost of focus and concentration. Positive visualization: National sports institutes have found that floating can promote positive visualization and mental rehearsal before or after training. We know that flotation therapy is a tool in eveyone’s healthy-living toolbox, but it can have special benefits for those of us who like to get out and push hard! You want us to keep the tanks spotless. Cosmetics, soaps, dyes, and general body stuff make it difficult. Help us help you! #2: If you use ear plugs, put them in when your ears are dry. #3. Don’t overheat in the shower. If the shower’s too warm, the tank may feel too cool by contrast. #4: Dry your face and tummy after your pre-float shower, before entering the tank. #5: Float naked - Swimsuits become crusty &amp; abrasive…a scratchy distraction! The door locks! The room is yours! #6: Sit down then lay back in the tank to begin. #7: Use the sides to reduce ‘ping-ponging,’ Gently touch the walls with your arms and legs to settle the water and settle yourself in the center of the tank. #8: Experiment! Find the most comfortable arm position for you. Arms at your side? Arms above your head? What works best for you? #9: Turn the lights off – Once you’re comfortable, darkness decreases distractions and improves your ability to relax and focus on your breathing. #10: Gently stretch when you’re done.
